FORMULATION OF TOOTHPASTE PREPARATION OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF BATAK ONION AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY TEST AGAINST STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS AND PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA

Abstract

The mouth is the initial part of digestion, in the mouth there are teeth, tongue, and saliva. Bad breath or halitosis is an unpleasant odor that comes from the mouth. The chemical content in toothpaste on the market such as aluminum hydroxide, if it enters the body in excess, will cause problems such as constipation and aluminum poisoning. The purpose of this study is the formulation of toothpaste preparations from ethanol extract of hobo onion (Allium schoenaprasum L.) as an herbal toothpaste that has antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Pseudmonas aeruginosa that is safe for public use. The method used in this research is experimental with stages including collection of hobo onion samples, making hobo onion ethanol extract, phytochemical screening of hobo onion ethanol extract toothpaste with concentrations of 5%. 10%, 15%, evaluation of the physical quality of the preparation and testing antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeroginosa bacteria and total plate number (ALT) test. The results showed that hobo onion ethanol extract contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids and glycosides and can be formulated into the best 15% EEBB toothpaste preparation because it is highly preferred by panelists both in shape, aroma, color and foaming ability, antibacterial activity shows resistance to the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is 22.46 ± 2.00 mm and 17.81 ± 5.65 mm. The total plate count (ALT) of toothpaste, 5% concentration of EEBB has a percentage of 48.6%, the percent reduction in the number of bacterial colonies at 10% concentration has a percentage of 54%. Percent reduction in the number of bacterial colonies 15% concentration has a presentation of 67%, but the percentage on miswak toothpaste on the market is slightly different, which is 52%.
