ANALYSIS OF THE HYDROQUINONE CONTENT OF WHITENING CREAM IN BEAUTY PRODUCTS BY UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETRY

Abstract
Hydroquinone has been prohibited from being used as a cosmetic ingredient, only limited to a maximum of 2% with a doctor's prescription, usually used in cosmetics as a skin whitening agent. This can cause cancer. For this reason, it is necessary to test the levels of hydroquinone content in whitening creams circulating on the market, both branded ones sold in cosmetics shops and unbranded ones sold in beauty salons in the city of Medan. This study aims to determine the levels of hydroquinone in several samples of facial whitening cosmetics. Hydroquinone content in samples of facial whitening cream circulating in the city of Medan. First, it was tested qualitatively using several chemical reactions, then the levels were determined using the UV-VIS spectrophotometry method. At a wavelength of 293 nm according to the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (Badan POM) Regulation number HK.00.05.42.1018 dated 25 February 2008, the maximum is 2%. The research results showed that of the 9 samples tested there was one sample that did not contain hydroquinone and in the 8 samples tested it contained hydroquinone and there were four samples whose levels did not meet the requirements of more than 2%, namely samples NEB= 0.71%, PDY= 1, 63%, DCF= 1.84%, and KYBC= 1.95%. The highest levels were found in the sample, namely GBC= 2.11%, BSB= 2.10%, KSPT= 2.05%, and KASN= 2.06%. Thus, samples that exceed this hydroquinone level should not be used freely as cosmetics.
